Elijah Cutts was born abt 1798 in GA and
died abt 1855 in Sumter Co., GA. He was the
son of Joseph Cutts, Revolutionary War Soldier
of Houston Co., GA. He married Rebecca Parker,
b. abt 1814, daughter of James and Rebecca
Parker of NC. In 1830 Elijah and Rebecca
made their home in Lowndes Co., GA. They
had one son under the age of 5 (I believe
this to be Elijah, Jr who served in the CSA
during the Civil War). By 1840 they are were
living in Sumter Co., GA. Source: 1830 &
1840 Ga Census Records.
In January of 1848, Delia, John C. and James William became under the guardianship of James Parker (believed to be Rebecca's brother) as orphans and minors of Elijah Cutts. In 1849 the same three children are still under the guardianship of James Parker, but only listed as minors of Elijah Cutts. On the 1850 Census Records of GA, Elijah is listed as the Head of Household with Rebecca and the three youngest children living with them. Also in 1850 Delia, John C., James William, Mary Elizabeth are put under the guardianship of James Parker still only as minors of Elijah Cutts. From 1855 to 1856, John C., James William, Mary Elizabeth, Lemuel Jackson, and Martha Ann Cutts, listed as orphans of Elijah Cutts, are under the guardianship of James Parker. This guardianship continued until December 9, 1859. I beleive Elijah died between 1850 and 1855, It is unknown why the children were placed under the guardianship of James Parker. Perhaps Elijah was unable to provide for his family because of an accident or illness.
By 1860, Rebecca Cutts moved from Americus to Andersonville, Sumter Co., GA and the three youngest children were once again living with her. Also, on the 1860 Ga Census Records, John C. is living with Lemuel Jackson Parker, brother to Rebecca, and working as a farm laborer.
